Do as Directed 1



Join the following sentences to make one complete sentence without using and, but or so:



1Polar bears are fierce territorial animals. Grizzly Bears are the same.

Polar bears as well as Grizzly Bears are fierce territorial animals.


2.The book fell to the floor. It opened to a page I had never read before.

After falling to the floor, the book opened to a unread page.


3.Rekha had a headache all morning. She remained alert through out the meeting.

Inspite of having a headache all morning, Rekha remained alert through out the meeting.

4.Beena is fine. That is all I know.

What I know is Beena is fine.


5. He lost his silver pen. It was his birthday present.

He lost his silver pen which was his birthday present.

6. I wish he was there .He could have helped us.
If he was there, he could have helped us.

7. He is a thief. He was beaten in the village.

He was beaten in the village as he was a thief.

8. He is walking slowly. He won't catch the train.

He would not catch the train because he is walking slowly.



Rewrite the following sentences according to the instructions given after each.
Make other changes that may be necessary, but do not change the meaning of each sentence.

1. If my dog is hungry, he barks.(Begin : Unless....)
Unless my dog is hungry, he does not bark.

2.Your essay impressed us.(Begin with : We....)
We were impressed with your essay.

3.Meera said,"I am going to bake a cake for your birthday tomorrow."(Write in reported speech)
Meera said that she was going to bake a cake for his birthday the next day.

4.As soon as she had finished one project, she started working on the text. (Begin : Hardly...)

Hardly had she finished one project when she started working on the text.
5. I did not intend to come late.(Use : 'intention)
My intention was to come late.
To come late was not my intention.

6.No other orator was as powerful as Demosthenes. (Begin :Demosthenes)
Demosthenes was more powerful than any other orator.

7.He arrived safely though it was chaotic outside. (Begin :Despite....)
Despite being chaotic outside, he arrived safely.
8.It is too late to change your mind.(Use : so...that)
It is so late that you can not change your mind.
9. No sooner did the president arrive than the band started playing.(Begin with: As soon as.... )

As soon as the president arrived, the band started playing.
10.He went to bed after finishing his work.(Use "and")
He finished his work and went to bed.
11. It is not his intention to leave the company.(Rewrite using verb form of "intention")
He does not intend to leave the company.

12. He is one of the most dedicated doctors in the hospital.(Begin with : Very few.....)
Very few doctors are as dedicated as he.

13.He will not be pardoned unless he apologizes.(Remove 'unless')
He will not be pardoned if he does not apologize.
He will be pardoned if he apologizes.

14.Despite being raining heavily he managed to reach his destination.(Use "but" as conjunction)
It was raining heavily but he managed to reach his destination.

15.Beyond this I cannot tell you.(Rewrite as complex sentence)
This is what I can tell you.

16.Hardly had the function started when the electricity failed.(Rewrite as negative)
No sooner had the function started than the electricity failed.
