Sample Activity Sheet : Class- XII Sub - English
HSC English Activity Sheet
1A) Read the first activity, read the extract and then do all theactivities : 12
A1. Pick out the ways the writer scared the birds. 2
We were an agrarian people. And my main hobby in my early teens was to wander through paddy fields to see the different kinds of birds and how they nest. On the outskirts of the paddyfields there had been many coconuts trees. Beautifully crafted nests of the weaver-birds-thookkanaam kuruvikal-would be seen dangling from the ends of palm leaves. Hundreds of these little birds would land on the paddy of the rice-plants at this stage of the paddy, my father would send me to our field with a tin-drum to scare these birds away. But often I have enjoyed the sight of these little birds balancing on the tender stalks and squeezing the milk out of the green rice when the paddy is ripe enough to harvest flocks of parrots would land there and cut the ripe stalks with their sharp beaks and fly away with the stalks dangling in their beaks. I have always liked to see this sight also.
The nests of parrots were neatly crafted holes in the trunks of palm trees, I continued to wonder how they made these holes on the hard trunks until I saw the patient work of the woodpeckers. They were the carpenters and their long sharp and strong beaks, chisel. They make the holes (in search of worms inside the weak spots of the trunks) and the parrots occupy them. If I heard the sound tak, tak, tak, I knew it was woodpecker chiseling a hard trunk. I would go after him. It seems that the woodpecker is the only bird which can walk perpendicularly on the tree trunks how beautiful the sight was!
A2. Describe the weaver birds 2
A3. Choose the statements which refers to the beautiful sight for narrator
a) The birds at the nests
b) Perpendicular walking of woodpecker.

Q2. Read the activity, read the extract and do all the ativities.
A1. Read the following statements. Write true or false. Correct the false statements.
1) The duck was excellent in running.
2) The rabbit was poor in swimming.
3) The squirrel was excellent in flying.
4) The eagle was the successful candidate getting top marks.Once upon a time the animals decided they must do something heroic to meet the problems of a “new world” so they organized a school.
They had adopted an activity curriculum consisting of running, climbing, swimming and flying. To make it easier to administer the curriculum, all the animals took all the subjects. The duck was excellent in swimming. In fact, better than his instructor. But he made only passing grades in flying and was very poor in running.
Since he was slow in running, he had
to stay after school and also drop swimming in order to practice running. This was kept up until his webbed feet were badly worn and he was only average in swimming. But average was acceptable in school so nobody worried about that, except the duck.
The rabbit started at the top of the class in running but had a nervous breakdown because of so much makeup work in swimming.
The squirrel was excellent in climbing until he developed frustration in the flying
class where his teacher made him start from the ground up instead of the treetop down. He also developed a “charlie horse” from overexertion and then got a C in
climbing and D in running.
The eagle was a problem child and was disciplined severely. In the climbing class, he beat all the others to the top of the tree but insisted on using his own way to get there.
At the end of the year, an abnormal eel that could swim exceeding well and also run, climb and fly a little had the highest average and was valedictorian.
The prairie dogs stayed out of school and fought the tax levy because the administration would not add digging and burrowing to the curriculum. They
apprenticed their children to a badger and later joined the groundhogs and gophers to start a successful private school.
Does this fable have a moral?

A Tissue may be defined as a group of cells having some shape, size, origin,
function and the same type of development. Tissues are basically classified into two groups namely, meristematic tissues, and
permanent tissues. Meristematic tissues are divided into two, these are position based and origin based. Permanent tissues are further
divided into two groups. They are simple tissues and complex tissues. On their basis of their position in the plant body meristematic tissues
are classified as aplicle – intercalary, and lateral. On the basis of origin, meristematic tissues are divided into 3 groups; they are
Pro – meristem, Primary – meristem and secondary – meristem. Simple tissues are classified into 3 groups, namely parenchyma, collechyma,
sclerenchyma, The two complex tissues are found in vascular plant. They are xylem and phloem.

1. State whether the following sentences are true or false. (2)
(i) Today 25,000 children die daily around the world from hunger related diseases. (False)
(ii) Finally, a poverty – free world would be economically less stronger and far more stable than the world today. (False)
(iii) People in the poverty free world would afford health services.
(IV) No free schooling required in that world.
Today 40,000 children die each day around the world from hunger – related diseases. In a poverty – free world, no children would die of such causes. Everybody in every part of the globe would have access to education and health – care services because he or she would be able to afford them. Unlike today,
the state would not be required to provide free or subsidized health – care or schooling.
All state organizations created to provide free or subsidized services for the poor would no longer be required and could be done away with. Thus, no need to welfare, or local welfare agencies, or the national welfare department. No need for hand – outs, no sup – kitchens, no food stamps, no free schools, no free hospital care, no begging in the streets. State – run safety – net programme would have no rationale for existence because no one would live on charity any more. State – run social security programmes, income – support programmes would be unnecessary.Social structures in a poverty – free world would, of course, be quite different from those that exist in a poverty – ridden world. But nobody would be at the mercy of anyone else, and that is what would make all the difference between a world without poverty and one riddled with it.Finally, a poverty – free world would be economically much stronger and far more stable than the world today.

A1. Enlist the area of Chaitanya's interest. 2
Ans: craft, art, music, dancing and sports.
Academically, he was still lagging behind the expected standard of
learning but it was okay. He started developing an all-round interest in
craft, art, music, dancing and sports.
Early in 1997-98, when he returned from state level inter-school
sports, he had two prizes to his credit and a silver medal. He had won his
laurels in athletic events and the silver medal in running race.
When I saw the prizes and read the citation Chaitanya had received, I was stupefied, in total disbelief, then - hugged him, kissed him
and cried unabashedly to my heart’s content. That day, I cried for the
first time out of joy and a sense of being vindicated. Without practice he
had competed with approximately 1,800 children drawn from various
schools all over the state. He was subsequently selected for the marathon
race, but he could not participate due to a health problem. “May be next
year, he would”, I assured myself. And I, as his proud mother, would
proudly chronicle his future achievements and success to inspire other mothers of the world.
Looking back at my own life, I feel that it is the spirit with which
we can accept our life gracefully is what matters ultimately; and it is love
which nourishes us. All other things are unimportant. Chaitanya has made
me look inwards. His handicap doesn’t disturb me any longer. He and I
shall live with it and still be happy. The mental strength which he has
given to me is inexhaustible.
One day, as both of us got onto a public transport bus, Chaitanya
offered to buy the tickets for us.
“One full, one half,” he said to the conductor beaming with joy.
Looking at him, I wondered whether he was really only a half ? An
incomplete person ? Was I really full ? Complete in all respects ? Why do
then normal people feel that they are ‘full’ and others like Chaitanya are
half or incomplete ? Chaitanya’s world is complete in itself, pure and
innocent while our lives are full of deceit, jealousies, ill feelings.
His words have intrigued me ever since. Whenever I think of
Chaitanya, I feel he is complete in himself although a little different from
us. How could I call him only a half ? The half, incomplete person was
myself and not him, The distance for the bus was the same for both of
us. Only the tickets were priced differently.
The day the world sees him the way I do, it will not be a one full or
a one half world. It will be one full world-A world full of love, caring and sharing.

Since India is a country of extremes and opposites, it is no surprise that while western India is composed of a desert, north east India is a lush, tropical paradise. The dry TharDesert is one of the most popular tourist destinations in India thanks to its myriad attractions. From the glorious forts that are now heritage resorts and hotels, to the pageantry of a land that sparkles with the brightness of its colours against the sere desert, Rajasthan has long captured the imagination of most visitors. And then there is the captivating brilliance of Gujarat with its folk’s arts and traditions. It is also home to some truly spectacular landscape: the Rann of Kutch. While the western part of India displays its vibrancy of culture via colour, the north eastern states of India rival each other in verdant greenery. Mumbai receives most of its water from water stored in the Bhaisa Reservoir. This is picked up at Pise, 48 km downstream of the Bhatsa Dam and is pumped from there. It is treated partly at Panjarpur and partly at Bhandup before it is supplied. The total amount it provides is 235 mgd. From the lower Vaitarna, Mumbai receives 10mgd of water. This is brought by gravity from the Lower Vaitarna reservoir and treated at Bhandup before it is supplied. About 40mgd of water from the Upper Vaitarna reservoir is released to replenish the Lower Vaitarna reservoir for further transmission. From the Tansa reservoir about 90 mgd of water is brought by gravity and treated at Bhandup before being supplied.

After war service in 1914-18, he came to be recommended for a gatekeeper’s post at Engladia’s. He liked the job very much. He was given a khaki uniform, a resplendent band across his shoulder and a short stick. He gripped the stick and sat down on a stool at the entrance to the office. And when his chief’s car pulled up at the gate he stood at attention and gave a military salute. The office consisted of a staff numbering over a hundred, and as they trooped in and out every day he kept an eye on them. At the end of the day he awaited footsteps of the General Manager coming down the stairs and rose stiffly and stood at attention, and after he left, the hundreds of staff poured out. The doors were shut; Singh carried his stool in, placed it under the staircase and placed his stick across it. Then he came out and main door was locked and sealed. In this way he had his stick twenty-five years of service, and then he begged to be pensioned off.
